Em "Backspacer", grupo deixa política de lado e investe em músicas curtas que refletem olhar para o passado, diz guitarrista
In “Backspacer” the band leaves aside the politics and focus on short songs that reflect a look to the past, says guitar player.

As paredes estão repletas de quadros com certificados de disco de ouro, ainda dos tempos em que a indústria fonográfica vivia dias menos tensos.
The walls are full of frames with golden disc certificates, still from the time when the phonographic industry had less tense days.
"Ten" (1991), "Vs." (1993) e "Vitalogy" (1994) são apenas alguns dos álbuns do Pearl Jam que estão lá, pendurados como se fossem troféus, em sala do escritório da banda, em Seattle. Um grupo de jornalistas do mundo inteiro, incluindo a Folha, ouviu, em primeira mão, o novo trabalho da banda, "Backspacer", que chega às lojas em 21 de setembro.
“Ten” (1991), “Vs” (1993) and “Vitalogy” (1994) are not only some of Pearl Jam albuns that are there, hung as if they were trophies, at the band office´s room, in Seattle. A group of journalists from all over the world, including “a Folha” (note: a well-know newspaper from Sao Paulo city), listened, first hand, the new work from the band “Basckspacer”, that arrives at the stores in September 21st.
Esses nobres enfeites de parede são também o retrato de uma era que teve seu apogeu e declínio, os dias do grunge, no começo dos anos 1990.
These nobles wall ornaments are also the portrait of an era which had its apex and decadence, the grunge days, in the early 90s.
Principal remanescente dessa cena musical, que teve o Nirvana como outro grande expoente, o Pearl Jam não quer, no entanto, virar relíquia de museu. Eles completam duas décadas de existência em 2010 e os integrantes estão na faixa dos 40 anos. Talvez nem se lembrem mais de seus primórdios, de banda underground, quando o vocalista, Eddie Vedder, era apenas um ex-frentista de posto de gasolina.
The most important survivor from this musical scene, which had Nirvana as another great name, Pearl Jam doesn´t want, however, to become a museum piece. They will have two decades of existence in 2010 e the members are around 40 years old. Perhaps, they don´t even remember their early times anymore, of underground band, when, Eddie Vedder, the vocalist, was only a former gas station attendant.
Hoje eles são uma grande corporação do rock com status de veteranos: lotam estádios no mundo inteiro e se envolvem em causas humanitárias, à moda do U2. No bairro de Georgetown, em Seattle, está o espaçoso escritório do grupo, que também serve de local de ensaios. O Pearl Jam não disfarça que é grande empresa.
Nowadays, they are a big rock corporation with status of vets: people from the all over the world come to the stadiums to see them, and they are involved also with humanitariam causes, like U2. In the neighborhood of Georgetown, in Seattle, there is the large group office, which is used also as a rehearsal place. Pearl Jam doesn´t disguise that they are a big company.
"O que me motiva hoje? Por um lado, sou músico, artista e quero sempre criar coisas novas e ir para a frente", diz o guitarrista Mike McCready, 43. "Mas também tenho que me lembrar de que a banda é um negócio. Há a motivação para eu manter casa e família não apenas minhas, mas as dos funcionários que trabalham aqui." Mesmo assim, eles tentam não fazer música burocrática.
“What motivates me today? For one side, I am a musician, artist and I want to always create new things and go forward”, says Mike McCready, 43, the guitar player. “But, also, I had to remeber that the band is a business. There is a motivation for me to support the house and family not only mine, but the employees ones which work here”. Despite this, they try not to make red tape music.
"Backspacer" é um disco curto e grosso, com pouco mais de 30 minutos de duração e 11 músicas. O tom urgente, roqueiro, guia o disco. "Gonna See My Friend" e "Supersonic" nos fazem lembrar que não apenas o rock "clássico" de Neil Young, mas também o punk do Ramones, é fonte de inspiração. "Quisemos ir direto ao ponto", explica o também guitarrista Stone Gossard, 43. "Tivemos uma tendência, no passado, de fazer músicas longas. É divertido ir na direção oposta agora, fazer canções concisas, pop." Gossard diz que a urgência sonora pode ser relacionada com a euforia da eleição de Barack Obama -o Pearl Jam não cansou de atacar a administração George W. Bush. "Mas este não é um disco político. As letras são sobre histórias pessoais, o planeta e a existência", afirma Gossard.
“Backspacer” is a short and thick disc, with a little more than 30 minutes of duration and 11 songs. The urgent tune, rocker, guides the disc. “Gonna See My Friend” and “Supersonic” remind us that it is not only “classic” rock from Neil Young, but also the punk from Ramones are sources of inspiration. “We wanted go direct to the point”, explains the also guitar player, Stone Gossard, 43. “We had a tendency in the past of doing long songs. It is funny to go in the opposite direction now, make concise songs, pop”. Gossard says that the sound urgency can be related to the euphoria of Barack Obama´s election – Pearl Jam had never been tired of attacking George W. Bush´s administration (Office). “But this is not a political disc. The lyrics are about personal stories, the planet and the existence”, says Gossard.
McCready explica o título do disco. ""Backspacer" é uma referência à tecla das antigas máquinas de escrever. Tem a ver com voltar, olhar para trás e ver a sua vida em retrospectiva." Os dois guitarristas dizem que é inevitável não relembrar o passado. "Qualquer pessoa, aos 40, começa a pensar mais sobre a família, a infância e os velhos amigos", diz Gossard. "Mas continuamos no mesmo estado de espírito de antes, de não pensar muito sobre o que estamos fazendo."
Mc Cready explains the disc title. “Backspacer” is a reference to the old typewriters key. Has to do with comeback, look back and see the life in a retrospective.” The two guitar players say that it is unavoidable not remember the past. “Any person at 40, starts thinking more about the family, the childhood and the old friends””, says Gossard. “But we are with the same spirit we had before, of not thinking too much about what we are doing.”
E agora, prestes a completar 20 anos de banda, o que pensam sobre o "grunge"? Seattle, enfim, não é mais o epicentro da música pop do planeta, e é raro encontrar alguém nas ruas da cidade vestindo camisas de flanela ou ouvir o Alice in Chains tocando em bares. ""Grunge" é uma palavra boa. Não sabíamos que o que fazíamos era grunge. É o termo exato para descrever o som do Mudhoney [banda de Seattle] e ajudou as pessoas a entenderem o que era essa música suja, fedorenta, que prestava tributo ao amadorismo. Mas tudo foi apenas uma manifestação do espírito punk", diz Gossard. No espírito ligeiro do disco, McCready resume: "Não importa a definição, é tudo rock".
And now, in the verge of reaching 20 years, what the band thinks about the “grunge”? Seattle, at least, is not the epicentre of the planet´s pop music anymore, and it is rare to find someone in the streets wearing flannel shirts or to listen to Alice in Chains playing in bars. “Grunge” is a good word. We didn´t know that what we did was grunge. This is the exact word to describe the sound of Mudhoney (Seattle´s band) and helped the people to understand what was this dirty, stinking music, which paid a tribute to amateurism. But all of that was only a manifest from the punk spirit”, says Gossard. In the disc quick spirit, Mc Cready summarizes: “No matter the definition, it is all rock”.
